In Days Of Old When Kids Were Bold...

I'm now in my 40th year of gaming, and I spend a lot of my time reflecting on this or that. Gaming has never been 'just a hobby' to me, well maybe for the first 12 months or so, but it's also not been an obsession. No, it's been an intrinsic, inseperable part of me. It's defined me in some respects; it's propelled me forward and in some ways, held me back. I was a very introverted and shy kid, and in fact I still am. If you've met me, you'll probably say 'yeah right'.  If you are a friend, you'll nod knowingly because you'll know that I'm not gregarious, I am sparing with my sociability to non-friends. Oh sure, I can be professional and courteous, but if you are not a friend, you'll never cross my threshold . If you don't resonate with me, then the chances are I'll just blank you if we meet, as a few have found at conventions when they have tried to insert themself into my reality or tagged along with a group of frien

It's been a full week, that's for sure...

Another week has gone by, and I confess it's been one filled with mixed motional triggers. At the start of the week, I received a message out of the blue from the person who was there at the very moment, I made history as the first customer of Games Workshop, Sheffield. In fact, it was his insistence that we travel to The Moor ( a paved precinct in Sheffield city centre) to visit Virgin Records so that he could acquire a 12 inch picture disc by Tygers Of Pan Tang, which led to us finding the store which was still being fitted out and stocked at the time. It's an afternoon, literally etched in my mind. Anyway, the message simply said 'I start chemotherapy in the next few days.' Now, it had been 11 years since I'd reached out to this former sidekick, when I was writing and fact checking my book, so this sort of hit me out of the blue. We've both gone our own ways in life for reasons I'll not go into as they are private to my friend, but let's just say we

Well, That Will Teach Me To Look Into The Murky Past...

I should have known that the unearthing of that copy of GWs Black Sun fanzine the other day would lead to an emotional rollercoaster of memory and eye watering expense. It's 1984, and my Dad has a part time job as a main collector for Littlewoods Footbal Pools, a job which involves a Friday night spent collecting literally hundreds of pounds and the entry forms from a network of collectors, before cashing up and taking the whole shebang late at night over to Doncaster to the regional director's office. I'm having to ride shotgun for my Dad for a £3 pittance. £3 was a fair amount in '84 I hear you say, but look folks, I was already earning £50 per week painting figures after school, so this was really just paying lip service to Mamon. Well, the day before had seen the news agent deliver the latest White Dwarf (yes my news agent managed to get the mag in a time before news agent distribution was the norm) and of course it contained the latest Black Sun z'zine.
