Another Loss To The Wargames World

After recently writing of Ron Kay of Irregular Miniatures, I am so saddened by news today of his passing at the age of 98. 

I have many fond memories of him for well over 4 decades of me being part of this hobby. 

Whether it was a massive army or just a few 25mm rabbits, Ron treated all we long haired, over-exuberant kids with the same friendly enthusiasm. 

It is no hyperbole to say he was a genuine British wargaming legend, who will be missed by many of us of a certain age, I am certain. 

My condolences to the Kay family.

Well, as I type it's the 4th of January 2026 and I am recovering from buying 9 kitchen knives with a £450 price tag. We've all done it I know, nipped into a bistro attached to a cutlery manufacturer and design museum (how niche is that combo?) for a quick coffee and a cake, and walked out with some kitchen weaponry, you've always dreamed of owning? Well, that was the situation on Friday. In my defence, I have already bought and paid for all my gaming stuff - well, 98% of it - for 2026, and paid the painter in full for enough work to apparently keep him fully occupied for 2 years by his own estimation. I say he'll crack it in 18 months, but it does mean that your correspondent has to seriously consider adding anything not already painted, to the collection. Counter Cultural Thoughts...

 OK, before I start, let's get the groundwork laid out.  I was lucky to 'come up' right at the start of the 'breakout' of gaming, beginning as I did in 1981 - It's 45 years ago, but feels still, like just a few months have passed. I am not your typical 'old fart' in cardigan, crimpolene trousers and comb over. At almost 58, I have long hair becuse I can and because that's who I am, I favour bright coloured t shirts, collect leather jackets (if leather offends you - deal with it) and outrageously bright footwwear, accessorising with 'women's' scarves and floral scents because - yes, I can, and because it is counter to the cultural norms for a hetrosexual man of my years. Memory Lane Part 24: Prehammer To Firsthammer & Beyond

 1982 saw the release of Warhammer. It flopped... Really, it did. The roleplayers who, at the time were the dominant force bought it, read it and sold it. Or simply didn't bother. There were stacks of the stuff piled on pallets at the front of the 4 or 5 GW stores, for a fraction of the cover price. It would be a while before we actually got it going locally, because we'd been using a set of D&D mass combat rules from White Dwarf, and they worked rather well, being solidly based in the kind of old school (let's say traditional) mechanics that historical wargamers liked. Some of the lads played the Lidless Eye rules using the Jacobite Miniatures 15mm Middle Earth rangeds which were loively little models with a lot of character. They were 'of their time' - what isn't, but they were great. WRG had a fantasy modification for their Ancients rules and of course there was the excellent Royal Armies of the Hyborean Age by FGU which allowed battles in the age of Cona...
