Back In The Saddle And Looking To The West (Riding)
Well, I am finally beginning my first holiday in a year, and by the gods, I need it. a whole month of doing what I please when I please and replenishing the batteries. My Summer month off was cancelled when on the 3rd day of our break, the Memsahib suffered a heart attack. So, simply pottering around, dining out and going to various concerts, recitals and theatrical productions with the woman who's my been best friend and fiercest critic for over 36 years is something I am going to savour.
Tomorrow sees the annual pleasure trip that is Recon in that notorious West Riding fleshpot, Pudsey, at the Civic Hall, a lovely venue which has held a Recon show (or two) every year since the 80s, and it's always been a show I've loved. It was a much 'meatier' show, back in the day, but it's free to get in and has a bring and buy, so it ticks all the boxes.
Moreover, they hall is always festively trimmed which gets the old festive juices flowing and has me feeling reasonably well disposed to my fellow man/unicorn/helicopter gunship.
I find it a very equitable way to round out the year's wargaming and to meet up with some of my friends from almost half a century of playing with toy soldiers. All in all, it's a fun day out for all the family.
And it really is family friendly, so there is no excuse for not taking the trip.
I have so many memories of shows at this venue, most notably watching the might Keith 'Ghengis' Benson destroy his opponents in competition games with a flair and panache that would get Gen Zedders freaking out and reaching for the brown paper bags with which to stem the resulting panic attacks, and sense of offense. Pure class...
I appear to be getting my gaming mojo back, and I have even got the Jethro Tull Christmas Album playing as I type.
At present, I am looking at a few options. I've purchased just under 1000 Dixon Miniatures, Sengoku period Samurai and 350 Copplestone Barbarians, which will be winging over to my painter, who is busy on around 1000 pre-slotta Orcs, Dark Elves and Dwarves along with assorted creatures.
I am mulling over several other projects:
Late Romans vs Sassanids
Late Romans vs Picts
Early War WW2 (skirmish)
AWI
GNW
Elizabethan Scots & English
Border Reivers (skirmish)
This morning, my brilliant posties delivered unto me 3 Grenadier Miniatures Barbarian War Moammoths and a big box of Battle For Wargamers magazines, which I am looking forward to building and reading them respectively, and I am hoping that this, combined with a good rest will have me all positive and in love with hobby again, metaphorically grabbing it by the love handles and riding it like my beloved black Raleigh 'Chopper'.
And now, if you will excuse me, I am going to go and waste an hour or two playing Call Of Duty before cooking 'Hunter's Chicken' with roasted root vegatables and watching a few episodes of 'The Golden Girls' with an alcohol free Guinness because as you know, I live an outrageous rock 'n' roll existence, many can only aspire to.
