A Literal Lead Pile

 My home is currently covered with figures on every surface.

 I spent the weekend packing and booking collection of, the latest Satanic Panic Miniatures Kickstarter, as well as a large quantity of painted 1/285 micro armour which is bound for the U.S and a debut on the show circuit.

And then yesterday, 20 kilos of 28,mm plastic Ancients arrived and so, after work yesterday, I was wading through it all to get it arranged in a way the painter can make sense of, along with 1900 decals...

That said, it means my Punic Wars era project is now well in hand and will comprise:

 386 Carthaginians (no allies other than Numidians, as I have plenty I can choose from in the other armies)

750 Celts

504 Republican Romans

400 Spanish 

500 Hellenistic Greeks

I'm rather excited about this as it will make for some beautiful and varied games, with lots of  colourful and tactically different troops - and elephants, LOTS of elephants.

My wife is, as always, being very understanding about this, probably more undertsanding than a wargamer of my fanatical metality deserves.

Well, as I type it's the 4th of January 2026 and I am recovering from buying 9 kitchen knives with a £450 price tag. We've all done it I know, nipped into a bistro attached to a cutlery manufacturer and design museum (how niche is that combo?) for a quick coffee and a cake, and walked out with some kitchen weaponry, you've always dreamed of owning? Well, that was the situation on Friday. In my defence, I have already bought and paid for all my gaming stuff - well, 98% of it - for 2026, and paid the painter in full for enough work to apparently keep him fully occupied for 2 years by his own estimation. I say he'll crack it in 18 months, but it does mean that your correspondent has to seriously consider adding anything not already painted, to the collection.  OK, before I start, let's get the groundwork laid out.  I was lucky to 'come up' right at the start of the 'breakout' of gaming, beginning as I did in 1981 - It's 45 years ago, but feels still, like just a few months have passed. I am not your typical 'old fart' in cardigan, crimpolene trousers and comb over. At almost 58, I have long hair becuse I can and because that's who I am, I favour bright coloured t shirts, collect leather jackets (if leather offends you - deal with it) and outrageously bright footwwear, accessorising with 'women's' scarves and floral scents because - yes, I can, and because it is counter to the cultural norms for a hetrosexual man of my years. Memory Lane Part 19: Getting Feet Under The Table. Or, First Steps In Creating A New Circle Of Friends In The 80s Pre-Apocalyptic World

Having no siblings until I was five, I got used to and enjoyed my own company.  At primary school, I had a few friends, such as Paul Heeley, Matthew France when I was at Firs Hill, and then, when I was at Limpsfield (a groundbreaking 'community school' run on an experimental framework, the name of which escapes me at 06:30) Alan Staniforth, Andrew Moffatt, Vinny Wilson, Carol Herbert (who killed my Lone Ranger doll in a mining accident) and Ian Vollum (or so I thought, but when we met in a nightclub aged 18, he had no memory of me - or so he said, despite being in the same class and hanging out at school every day for 3 long child years). UPDATE: 24 hours after this post, I was speaking to Ian, and reminiscing about things going back to being 11 or 12 years old.
