Imperialist Wargaming In Africa & On Mars

It's been a stupidly busy week, in a good way of course because busy means I am working hard and paying the bills.

It has meant however, that my time for sitting and looking at gaming stuff and getting big ideas when Christmas is just around the corner , has thankfully been somewhat curtailed.

That said, what has happened, is that I've decided on where I am going with my gaming now that all the Ancients are funded and with my painter of choice.

I love sci-fi and so, fancying something different to grim armoured troopers and fast, sleek vehicles, I have actually been looking at Victorian Sci-fi and in particular, I've managed to get myself convinced that grand and epic battles on Mars would be fun.

To this end, I have 50 units (note I say units and not figures) from the Paroom Station VSF line, courtesy of Ral Partha Legacy, mostly Martians but with some British regular troops and a band of human renegades.

Rules-wise I have gone with the Space 1889 'Soldiers Companion' set, which despite the usual GDW propensity to be a bit mixed up on the layout and presentation front, look to be straight forward enough and have some fun mechanics.

I'm looking forward to painting these as I have resisted such a project ever since the mid-90s when I managed and then owned Dungeons & Starships.

The models are exquisite and with some nice terrain, I think great fun can be had.

Last weekend, it being Halloween weekend, we watched what is probably my favourite film of the 80s - Ghostbusters.

And, as one might expect with a nerd of a certain age, the desire to own my own proton pack surfaced. And then as is the way, I managed to bag the last one in Hasbro UK's warehouse for a great price, a 1:1 scale '84 pack weighing in at 20lbs.

Now, I have a project that will stop me whining about owning a pack whenever I watch the film, and I can start the customisation of it and weathering, over the next year or so.

Finally, I decided that I still want to play some Zulu games, and so, when I saw well over 800 15mm Minifigs, which, - with a gloss varnish and some decent basing, will  look very smart  - priced at less than a bare casting sets you back these days, I decided that it was a sign from wherever and dived in:

Now all I need are a few British and Boers and it's game on in South Africa...

Well, as I have been hard at it since 6AM without a break, I am off to play a video game or two, before tea and Ghostbusters II
