Making A Start, Out In The Stars

Mid week,I received a package containing the 28mm sci-fi figures I blogged about last week. They are frankly, rather lovely models and so, I've given them my usual gloss and mate varnishes and they are now awaiting use.

And so, a background is need for me, because I am that kind of person.

'By the early 23rd century, mankind was stretching out into the stars, and had the technology to not only terraform and colonise suitable worlds, but also to genetically modify and vat grow, a strain of humanity which was better suited for the hostile environments. To mark them as genetically and tank grown, they were gene written to also have a blue skin and modified optical organs which had a white film over the eye,. They were in all other respects 'human' but as is the way of mankind, these people were seen as being inferior to pure strain humans, becoming known by the derogatory name 'Gennies' or 'Rogues', the latter a nod to a fictional character in a late 20th century comic book.

In turn, pure strain humans became known as 'Un-Alts'. By the late 23rd century Gennies were not allowed on Earth following the 'DNA Riots' of 2284 and were only allowed on colony worlds where they were treated as poorly as were the natives of the Asian continents during Earths 19th century colonial expansions.

However, the colonies for the most part thrived and although some were allowed autonomy, the majority were still under Earth jurisdiction, and there was a high degree of friction between Un-Alts and Gennies with some crossover by either the more socially enlightened or downright criminally minded.

On many colonies, the Gennies live in insular ghettos where they have their own codes of conduct and home grown legal frameworks. They are a tough people and anyone stupid enough to test the social glue of the Gennie community will soon learn how easy they themselves can become stuck like an insect on flypaper and swatted.

There is a growing dissatisfaction with Earth Governance rule and across the colony worlds, unrest is becoming open hostility. Earth Governance forces are stretched very thinly. civil disturbance is on the rise and many colonies have their own militias and in many cases actual standing armies who are no longer just acting as deterrents to possible alien threats, but also as protectors of their own people from the persecution of Earth Governance. Two years ago in 2309 the colony world of 'Lee-2112' was all but wiped out by Earth Governance forces following a general uprising which rather than cowing the Gennies simply poked the hornet's nest and so many colonies are now effectively under martial law, with open combat between Earth Governance and Colonial forces. Added to this human criminal elements such as the Nu-Yakuza and Il Nostro Universo manipulating the stuation to make massive financial gains, and being willing to aid the Gennies if it aids their own cause and you have a lethal melting pot.

If that was not enough there are reports of an A.I culture making contact with mankind and not holding out the olive branch to humanity, although it seems to be less inclined to attack non-pure strain groups. Although not committing to anything like  a true war, the A.I are making small scale raids against human data and technology networks, using surgical strikes and terminating any living thing which stands between them and their goal. This has sometimes led to an uneasy and certainly temporary alliance between Un-Alt and Gennie forces who, once the A.I threat is dealt with, go right back to killing each other.'

And that's about it for the present, but it gives me a nice little framework for using the models I have and others I've seen in the Copplestone and Grenadier lines.

Next, I'll start collecting scenery for a 4x4 urban area, along with vehicles, civilians and the like and then I can start to tel the stories which have yet to be written amongst the stars in the 24th century.
